As I write those words, I am already tired. It seems in the digital age business; we have created a culture that says, “If I’m not on all these platforms and posting regularly, then I have no chance of succeeding in business.”
As a solo entrepreneur, if I focused all my energy on those platforms and marketing, I wouldn’t have the time to do what I actually got in business to do.
I didn’t go into business to be a marketer (but marketing is required). I got into business to do what I love, create my own schedule, and have the freedom and flexibility to do what I want when I want to.
First, a disclaimer: none of those platforms are bad. In fact, MySyde is on most of them. But one thing I know for sure: our business is not going to grow simply because I post regularly on many platforms. I know the fastest way to grow my business is through word-of-mouth marketing.
My best marketing comes from clients I have served well in the past. And what do they do? They recommend me to others. Why? Because they appreciate the quality of my work.
So, to answer the question, word-of-mouth marketing is not dead in digital age business. In fact, it’s more needed now than ever before. Why? Because we have created distrust for what we see in the digital space. (I would say this is a healthy distrust.)
Is that rating or review really accurate? Is this TikTok video just a bunch of hype with nothing behind it? Do I believe the images I see on Yelp or Instagram? (Computer-generated images have their downside.)
All that, and one thing is still true: I trust my friends and neighbors. If they recommended someone to do a fence repair job at my house, I don’t care if they are on Facebook or what their rating is: I’m going to hire them.
Statistics show that 82% of the time, people act on the recommendation of someone they know.
That’s why MySyde exists. We want to help you leverage word-of-mouth marketing in this digital space so that you can focus on what you do best and not stress out about marketing. Allow your clients to endorse you personally on MySyde. Then allow your network to do the rest.
Word-of-mouth marketing is very much alive in the digital age.
